PGE and Ørsted selected a contractor for certification of Baltica 2

PGE Group and Ørsted signed a contract with DNV for certification of components of the offshore wind farm. This year, DNV was officially authorized by the Polish Ministry of Infrastructure to certify offshore wind farms.

The Baltica Offshore Wind Farm is the largest offshore wind project in Poland given the capacity planned for development. This year, we have already finalized the contracting of all elements for the maritime part of the Baltica 2 project, which is scheduled to be commissioned in 2027. The next step was the selection of a company to certify the project, including design compliance and admission to operation. Cooperation with
a recognized company that is experienced in certification of offshore wind projects around the world will certainly ensure the safety and reliability of operation of the largest renewable energy project in Poland,
said Wojciech Dąbrowski, President of the Management Board of PGE Polska Grupa Energetyczna.

Project certification is important because it enables proper risk management in the project and helps achieve reliable operations. We are glad that Baltica 2, which is of strategic importance for the Polish economy, will be certified by the largest certification company in the world, said Agata Staniewska, managing director of Ørsted Offshore Poland.

The scope of work for DNV on Baltica 2 includes providing a design compliance certificate confirming the compliance of the technical designs with international standards for the design of offshore wind farms and their consistency with the construction design and applicable regulations. These are necessary documents required by the provisions specified in the Maritime Safety Act and the so-called Offshore Act. The certification applies to wind turbine generators, offshore substations, foundations, as well as inter-array and export cables.

DNV is a consulting company operating in the field of risk management and a globally operating classification society specializing in the maritime industry. Provides testing, certification and technical consulting services for the energy production chain, including for the oil & gas and offshore wind industries. It employs over 700 people in Poland.

Baltica 2 is one of two stages of the Baltica Offshore Wind Farm – next to Baltica 3. Ørsted and PGE plan to deliver Baltica 2 of 1.5 GW capacity by the end of 2027 and Baltica 3 of 1 GW capacity by 2029. The project is subject to final investment decision. Baltica 2 and Baltica 3 will create the Baltica Offshore Wind Farm of 2,5 GW total capacity. It will contribute significantly to Poland’s green energy transition, delivering clean energy for nearly four million households in Poland.

About the PGE Group

PGE Polska Grupa Energetyczna is the largest electric power company and supplier of electricity and heat in Poland. By combining its fuel and power generation resources and having distribution networks, PGE guarantees safe and stable supply of electricity and heat to over 5.6 million customers. The PGE Group’s generating units produce over 40 percent of electricity in Poland. With 7 percent of installed wind farm capacity in Poland the PGE Group is the country’s largest renewable electricity company. The plan for the coming years is to continue developing renewable energy sources – especially based on wind and sun energy, as well as investments in energy storage, construction of a nuclear power plant, upgrade of energy distribution grid and decarbonizing heat generation segment. The PGE Group’s investment plan covers the country’s largest investment in offshore wind power plants. The PGE Group’s Offshore Program is development of the Baltica Offshore Wind Farm, which runs in two stages – Baltica 2 and Baltica 3, with a total installed capacity of up to 2.5 GW by 2030. Then, after 2030, Baltica 1 project will join the Group’s portfolio. Thanks to new seabed areas acquired in the Baltic Sea the PGE Group will be able to develop further offshore wind projects by 2040. Including currently developed projects it will allow for achieving over 7 GW total capacity installed in the offshore wind. This makes PGE Group the biggest investor in Poland’s offshore wind in terms of capacities planned for development.
